What is RSS?

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is an XML-based format for sharing and distributing Web content. Using an RSS reader, you can view data feeds from various sources, such as E-Reports.net, including headlines, promotions, and links to full articles.

How do I access RSS?

RSS News Aggregators:

RSS/News Aggregators (also called Readers) will download and display RSS feeds for you. A number of free and commercial Aggregators are available for download. Many aggregators are separate, “stand-alone” programs; other services will let you add RSS feeds to a Web page.

Weblogs:

Another way many people use RSS feeds is by incorporating content into weblogs, or “blogs”. Blogs are web pages comprised of usually short, frequently updated items and web links. Blogging as a publishing tool is used for many purposes: traditional journalism, personal journals, group discussions around a topic, and many combinations in-between.

What are comments and trackbacks and how can I control them in my blog?

Comments and trackbacks are features that are common to most blogging systems and software.

A comment is a reply or feedback that a reader can leave in response to an individual entry in your blog. When reading your blog, readers click the Comment button next to an entry to leave a reply or feedback for that entry. You can then write a comment in response to a reader’s comment, therefore creating a dialog between you and your readers. A trackback is a link from an entry in another blog or Web site to an entry in your blog. When reading your blog, readers can create a trackback (or link) to the individual entry in your blog from their blog or Web site. The trackback sends a ping from the originating site to your blog, to notify it that a link was created.

If you choose to, you can disallow comments and trackbacks in your blog. Otherwise, readers can leave comments regarding individual entries in your blog and can create trackbacks to entries in your blog.

If you opt to allow comments and trackbacks to your blog, the software’s Manage Comments page lists all of the comments for each entry in your blog and the Manage Trackbacks page lists all of the trackbacks for all entries in your blog.

From the Manage Comments page you can typically reply to, view, approve, or delete comments, ban IP addresses, or mark comments as SPAM. From the Manage Trackbacks page you can view, approve, edit, or delete trackbacks, ban IP addresses, or mark trackbacks as SPAM. Banning an IP address prevents people who are accessing your blog from that IP address from writing comments or creating trackbacks, respectively.

Normally, new comments and trackbacks are not automatically published to your blog. New comments or trackbacks made by others have a status of Pending Approval until you either approve them or mark them as SPAM. Comments that you author or trackbacks that you create have a status of Draft until you approve them.

    Plan Your Site Carefully

First, identify clear marketing goals for your site, such as generating leads, building a database of potential customers’ names and e-mail addresses, or putting a product catalog online to save the time and expense of printing and mailing. Quantify your objectives—such as increasing sales by 15 percent—so you know whether or not your site is successful.

Quantify your goals for sales, clicks, or inquiries so you can objectively measure the success of your e-commerce Web site.

Then, figure out what your potential customers need to know before buying your products and services. This might include:

Plan the structure of your site, focusing on making it easy for customers to learn what they need to know, make a purchase decision, and then buy quickly. Create a site map that outlines every page on your site starting with the home page and mapping how customers get from one page to the next. Use tools that quantitatively measure site activity-where customers are clicking, how often, and whether they end up purchasing-then compare the results with your goals.

    Web Site Hosting

Web site hosting services have never been more economical. Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) may provide very basic web hosting services for little or no extra cost. This is, however, not usually a very good solution for an internet business. Pages served from ISPs often load very slowly, data storage is limited, and such essentials as databases and shopping carts are not supported. ISP hosted services are often fine for personal web pages, but are inadequate for money making businesses.

Selecting a Host For Your Site

Your Web site is a series of files that reside on a special computer, called a Web server, connected to the Internet. For customers to visit your site, they must actually connect to that Web server via the Internet and view the files. Web servers and the Internet connections that link them to visitors must be fast and powerful enough to quickly respond to all the visitors’ requests to view your site.

Large businesses prefer the complete control of purchasing, setting up, and managing their own Web server hardware and software. Other small- and medium-sized businesses prefer to turn to a Web hosting company, instead of investing in the hardware, software, and infrastructure necessary to get online. For a monthly fee, Web hosting companies will connect your site to the Internet at high speed via one of their Web servers, allowing the site to be viewed by anyone with an Internet connection and a Web browser. The host provides your site with space on a server, and also offers Web server software, access to its high-speed Internet connection, tools for managing and maintaining your site, customer support, e-commerce features, and more. There are many Web hosting options to choose from, so use the following list to find one that meets your needs.
